"Where The Hill Country
Begins"
CORNYVAL????
No need to look up the spelling in a dictionary - you won't find it there. Cornyval is the name of an event that is about to celebrate its
43rd consecutive year. Festivities begin Thursday, May 1st and
run through
Sunday, May 4th at the Helotes festival grounds. The grounds
are located on Leslie Rd. just off of Bandera Rd in Helotes, Texas
across from the entry to O'Connor High School.
Cornyval began in the 1960s as a way for Helotes non-profit organizations to raise money. Additionally it funds scholarships awarded to court winners in the Miss Helotes Scholarship Pageant. The HFA
also sponsors a traveling parade float which travels throughout South Texas representing the city of Helotes.
Live music, fun and games, food, arts and crafts and other
entertainment is provided for your enjoyment throughout the four
days of the festival.
The HFA will present three PRCA rodeo performances, Thursday through Saturday, produced by the Sammy
Catalina Rodeo Company. The Helotes PRCA Rodeo was recognized as having one of the top 5 PRCA Outdoor Rodeo Committees, at the PRCA finals in Las Vegas in December 2003.
Alamo Attractions will present a full carnival midway including thrilling
rides, a super ferris wheel, games and amusements.
Fifteen dollar armbands, good for four hours of unlimited rides, will be available Thursday and Sunday. Bring the family and friends and enjoy. Special prices will be available on Friday and Saturday.
Approximately 75 food and craft booths will fill the grounds with sights, sounds, and smells that will whet your appetite to fill your tummy.
On Saturday and Sunday the family area is filled with attractions for
kiddies and adults alike to enjoy.
The Medicine Wagon and T-Bone the Longhorn Steer will return to entertain Cornyval goers with an old fashion snake oil medicine show. The Texas Civil War
Enactors will return with shows and an encampment complete with interesting displays of typical weapons, equipment for bivouacking and medical services.
The "All Outdoor Kid's Cat Fishing" sponsored by HEB will
be back. Other activities include face painting, live music,
a corn eating contest,
and much more.
